Trabzonspor are set to end their search for a new head coach by appointing Thomas Reis. The club, currently ninth in the Süper Lig with seven points from five matches, aims to improve its difficult league position under the new manager.
An agreement between the clubs for Reis's appointment is reported to be in place. The 52-year-old German coach will move to Trabzonspor despite currently being under contract with Bulgarian side Ludogorets until 2027. A transfer fee between the two clubs will therefore be required.
Thomas Reis knows Turkish football well from his time at Samsunspor last season. He delivered a successful first campaign, guiding the team to a third-place finish in the Süper Lig. However, he was dismissed last February with the team sitting seventh in the league. At Ludogorets, Reis has a record of seven wins and two draws from nine matches, putting the team second in the Bulgarian top flight.
The head coach position at Trabzonspor became vacant after Fatih Tekke departed at the end of September. Tekke's exit initially caused controversy, but the parties later agreed to part ways.
The new manager will have star forward Mohamed Salah in his squad. Salah is the team's top scorer this season with four goals in five competitive appearances. The team's last match was a 1-0 defeat away to Konyaspor on 12 September.
Reis's first test will be the derby against league leaders Galatasaray at the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadium on Saturday, 19 September.
