Futbol, not just in Trabzon but across all of Anatolia, has been a unifying force for decades. However, its roots go much further back than one might think. The rivalry between two local teams, İdmanocağı and İdmangücü, which had divided the city since 1913, laid the groundwork for what would become Trabzonspor.
The competition between these clubs was fierce, with İdmanocağı winning five consecutive championships from 1929 to 1930, and İdmangücü following suit in 1934-1935, holding the title for seven years. This rivalry created a divide among Trabzon's residents, with supporters of each team adopting nicknames like 'Ocaklılar' (for İdmanocağı) and 'Güçlüler' (for İdmangücü).
In 1960s, as professional leagues began to take hold in Turkey, the need for a strong local representative became clear. After much debate, İdmanocağı and İdmangücü agreed to merge into Trabzonspor in 1967. However, this union was not without its challenges; İdmanocağı refused to join the new club, leading to a legal battle that ultimately resulted in the creation of Trabzonspor.
On August 2, 1967, the merger between İdmanocağı and İdmangücü was finalized, along with the inclusion of Karadenizgücü and Martıspor. The new club adopted a unique color scheme: Bordo-Mavi (navy-blue).
Trabzonspor's journey from the second division to becoming one of Turkey’s most successful clubs began in 1967-68 when they joined the Second Division. After finishing sixth in the White Group, Trabzonspor secured a promotion to the First Division in the 1973-1974 season and won their first league title in 1975-1976.
This story of division leading to unity is not just about one club but symbolizes the complex history of Trabzon and its people.
